What is e-Residency?

Estonian e-Residency - Complete Guide 2026

What is e-Residency?

Estonian e-Residency is an official digital identity issued by the Estonian government that allows entrepreneurs worldwide to register and manage an EU company entirely online from anywhere in the world. The program launched in 2014 and has since welcomed over 120,000 people from 170 countries who have founded over 33,000 companies.

Important: e-Residency is NOT a physical residence permit, visa, citizenship, or work permit. It is a digital business tool, not a path to immigration.

What Can You Do with e-Residency?

  • Register a private limited company (OÜ) in Estonia entirely online
  • Sign business documents with a digital signature legally valid across the EU
  • Open a business bank or fintech account
  • Submit tax returns via the e-MTA portal
  • Access the EU's 500-million-person market

  • Costs in 2026

  • Government application fee: €150 (includes background check, card production, delivery to embassy)
  • Card validity: 5 years
  • Renewal fee: €150
  • No separate annual or maintenance fee
  • Company registration fee: €265
  • Contact person fee: €200–400 per year

  • Taxation for e-Residency Companies in 2026

Estonia's tax system is highly attractive for e-residents:

  • No tax on undistributed profits — only pay when distributing dividends
  • Corporate tax rate: 24% (from 2026, up from 22%) — applies only at the time of dividend distribution
  • You can keep profits in the company and reinvest them
  • VAT registration is not mandatory if annual VAT turnover is under €40,000
  • Estonian social taxes do not apply to most e-residents living outside Estonia
  • Personal income tax is paid in your country of tax residence

  • Banking and Payments

Accessing a bank account is one of e-Residency's challenges:

  • Some Estonian banks (LHV, SEB, Swedbank) serve e-residents
  • Fintechs like Wise Business, Revolut Business, and Stripe are more practical options
  • Since 2019, an Estonian bank account is no longer required to confirm initial company capital

  • Application Process

    1. Register online at e-resident.gov.ee

    2. Provide passport, passport photo, and Visa or Mastercard

    3. Approval time: 3–8 weeks

    4. Card sent to your chosen Estonian embassy

    5. Fingerprinting at the embassy is mandatory

    6. Kit includes the card, USB card reader, PIN and PUK codes

    Limitations and Important Notes

  • e-Residency does NOT grant a residence permit, visa, or right to work in Estonia
  • Provides no access to Estonian social, healthcare, or educational services
  • Not a tool for tax evasion — you must pay taxes in your country of tax residence
  • A 2% defence tax on gross income of employees of e-Residency companies operating in Estonia applies from 2026
  • The originally proposed 2% corporate profit tax for January 2026 was cancelled and not implemented

  • Who is it Best For?

e-Residency offers the most value for:

  • Freelancers and digital consultants offering international services
  • SaaS startups and online businesses
  • Digital nomad entrepreneurs needing an EU legal structure
  • Those wanting to retain and reinvest profits in the company
